It is the perfect place to take a rest admiring this beautiful Reidaikyo bridge.

Let’s see how it is and what you can enjoy!

THE KEY STONE GARDEN in Misato-town, Kumamoto.

The origin of the name, “THE KEYSTONE GARDEN”.

First, I’d like to explain about the word, “keystone”.

When building a stone bridge, first thing to do is to assemble a strong wooden frame(called 支保工(Shihokou)) and put stones one by one from the sides.

The last stone, which will be placed in the centre of it, is called “要石(Kaname ishi, means keystone)”. If a keystone is placed properly, even after taking out the frame, only the arch will stand. Usually, most stone bridges have 壁石(kabeishi, means wall stones) which are piled up along the arch to strengthen the bridge.

When I visited 石匠館(Sekishoukan, means stone bridge museum) in Yatsushiro, the attendant lady showed how to place stones and take out the frame using the wooden miniature. I learned how important it is to be precise with processing stones and assembling a frame.

Stone bridges are blood, sweat and tears of people who were involved them.

Enjoy the aromatic and dramatic organic cuisine!

After admiring Reidaikyo bridge, we visited this cafe, “THE KEYSTONE GARDEN” which stands just in front of Reidaikyo bridge.

Next to the bridge, you’ll see this red gate and tree house.

Driving down the road, there is a parking lot for about 30 cars.

They renovated the 120 year-old house.

The house, bridge and nature create beautiful scenery and you can enjoy at any time of the year.

The owner is such a gentle man and he is fluent in English.

He welcomed us and guided us to the table.

As soon as entering the room, we found the great view of Reidaikyo bridge.

It is the best place for admiring the beautiful bridge!

The owner used to live in Tokyo but after 2011 Tohoku earthquake, he moved to 美里町(Misato-cho, means Misato-town) where Reidaikyo bridge stands.

He was attracted by the beautiful nature and opened this restaurant.

THE KEYSTONE GARDEN uses selective organic ingredients.

They use organic vegetable, fruits and grind flour by water mills and don’t use additives at all.

During lunch time, you can enjoy course lunch, deer burger set, etc.

They grill meat with firewood so that you’ll enjoy aromatic and dramatic cuisine.

I’m sure these amazing foods will satisfy both your stomach and heart.

This time, we went there for tea and here are what we ordered.

This is pudding and granola.

Once you visit the restaurant, you’ll understand why.

The owner introduced me this accommodation, “Villa yamatosaryo”, which is in Yamato-town and about 40 minutes drive from THE KEY STONE GARDEN.

They renovated the old traditional house, It’s a type of accommodation which you can rent a whole house so it’ll be great for groups and also events.

There is a kitchen so you can cook or have dinner at THE KEYSTONE GARDEN. You can also order deli from the restaurant.

The building and surrounding nature look amazing. I’d love to visit there next time.
