Furaibou(風来望) ~Guest House in the west coast of Amakusa Kumamoto~

Have you stayed at any guest house before?

There are many guest houses around the world and Japan is not an exemption.

They are attractive especially to backpackers who want to travel around the world with lower budget.

Communicating with people from all walks of life is the best thing about staying at a guest house.

It’ll be an amazing experience if you meet someone new and have opportunities to talk to them.

It’s on the west coast of Amakusa and it takes about 2 and a half hours from the centre of Kumamoto-city by car.

You can enjoy many historical places and natural sites in Amakusa so you won’t feel it’s too far(Of course, just coming to this guest house is totally worth it.)

※ Please check the previous articles of other attractive places in Amakusa, too!

The amazing thing about Furaibo is that it faces to 天草灘(Amakusa-nada, means Amakusa Open Sea).

If you’re an active out-door type of person, you can enjoy camping, fishing, diving, kayak, SUP etc…

Or if you want to just relax and do nothing like you’re in a resort, you can unwind on a hammock in front of the sea and admire the amazing sunset.

If you go there in winter, you can relax in front of the lovely fireplace, reading books all around the house.

Meet the Kind Owners and Kei

The owners of Furaibou are Tatsu-san and Masako-san, who used to be backpackers and traveled around New Zealand for a year.

They stayed at the guest house for over 6months and they were enjoying fishing, doing marine sports, cooking, interacting with people etc.

Tatsu-san is from Kobe and Masako-san is from Shizuoka.

I asked why they chose Amakusa to open their guest house, they said they loved it. Though it sounds simple, it’s everything to them.

Meet Kei, too. She is a lovely cat and very calm.

If you have any questions, ask Masako-san.

She can speak good English and there is an English website which will be useful for you.

You can ask her about the marine sports, meals, BBQs, recommended places in advance.

Our Experience at Furaibo in Amakusa Kumamoto.

Since we visited there at the end of December, it’s so cold outside and it wasn’t the good time to do marine sports.

(Though we witnessed some people enjoying surfing! My friend said it’s not that cold in the sea, but really??)

On the way to Furaibo, we stopped by at the supermarket and got ingredients for dinner and breakfast.

In Amakusa, there are many local markets and you can get locally-grown vegetables and fresh seafood.

If you stay at Furaibo, I’d strongly recommend you to have BBQ.

One of my friend had been there before in October and she ordered BBQ.

You don’t need to bring anything.

There are some options and the most convenient one is the set which includes meat and vegetable and you don’t need to prepare anything.

They’ll prepare all the tools and clear them afterward.

Also there are seafood set which include seafood the owner catches.

You can also order 刺身(Sashimi, means row fish).

Unfortunately, this time we cooked by ourselves since it’s freezing outside.

I’d heard there are basic cooking tools, such as frying pans, pans, cutleries and plates.

But there are also electric kettles, rice cookers and a toaster.

The kitchen is lovely and we enjoyed cooking.

The room is also nice and comfortable.

There are 2 dorms, one of them is only for women and the other dorm is for both.

Since we were the only guests on that day, we used the women dorm.

There are two bunk beds and it’s for four.

Every place is nicely decorated with good taste of furniture and decoration.

The house used to be owned by one local person but after the owners of Furaibo had renovated it.

Isn’t it amazing if you can see this beautiful view from where you stay?

My friend said she slept very well. She says she usually can’t sleep continuously but thanks to the sound of wave, she could.

What You Can Enjoy at Furaibo, the amazing guest house in Amakusa.

You can rent a tent and do camping in front of the shore.

Even you stay in a tent, you can use facilities inside of the house, such as the kitchen, dining room, shower room, toilets etc.

There is a famous 温泉(Onsen, means hot spring) area, called 下田温泉(Shimoda-onsen, Shimoda hot spring).

It’s about 5 minutes by car.

There are many 旅館(Ryokan, means Japanese style hotel) which offer good hot spring for people who just drop by, not staying.

After a long driving, that’ll sooth you.

Visit Furaibo and enjoy Amakusa!

If you love nature and interacting with people, it’d be the best choice for you.

Every season has its own attraction and you can enjoy it at any time of the year.

Staying with your friends and families are great but you can also enjoy staying alone.

I’d love to visit when it becomes warmer again.

We might come across sometime!
